Front Cover Final Progress

 

I have added in my last couple of cover lines since my last update and have made sure everything is the way I want it. I have placed everything in the right place and have made sure that there is not too much space between each different aspect of my cover. I used the grid lines to make sure everything was even.

I have added a bit of red into my cover as my main article shall be centred around the colour of my models hair and clothing, which is Orange and Red. I have re-added the band list as I decided a different font may mean too many fonts and I have changed them to white to match the coverlines as it isn't too out there and it matches my current colour scheme choice.

I have changed the font of my title and moved the main headline around. I have put a cover line in and also added a barcode. I have taken my band list off for now as I didn't like the colour and I was unsure on the font. I have added the date and the price on the cover.

I changed the colour scheme of my front cover and added a title and cover lines onto it. I am sticking to the yellow blue and white theme with a pop of other colours if necessary. I got all of my fonts from 1001fonts and 1001freefonts

I used the quick select tool to select my model and put her on a background. I inverted the mask and then shifted the edge to make sure her hair was not cut off in a weird looking way.

 

I then changed the hue and saturation of the photograph so that the face didn't look so red/orange as it looked similar to her hair colour and the clothing she had on.

Because the backdrop was a green screen, the green colour reflected off her skin and therefore I had to play about with the colour balance to make her skin look a natural colour.

I first opened my chosen image into Photoshop so I was able to edit the image ready to go on a cover. The white balance was off on the camera when I was taking my photographs and therefore I had to fix that.

Photograph Choice

For the cover, this was my favourite photo however, the white balance was off and it was so hard to crop out the green background so editing took some time. My other photographs were either too light or too dark and some were extremely blurred. Overall, I chose the photographs I thought would go well with the genre and also followed my style models which weren't blurred or off colour.

Main Article Draft

Being in a band, Aria Daines always had people to rely on and comfort her on stage. She has just announced that she is going solo so we have her here at Riot for her first solo interview about why and how she made her decision and what she has coming up.

Riot: First off, how did Endless Innocence initially start?

Aria: The boys and I had been such good friends since Secondary school. We used to hang out and play music in my bedroom. When we were all around 18 years old, we finally decided that being in a band would be a good idea and that it could actually turn out to be something great and a career instead of just a hobby.

R: It was a very successful three years, why did you decide to leave the band?

A: We’ve all been such good friends for so long and I feel like now is the right time to let them do their thing and for me to do mine. I don’t feel suited to a band anymore and that’s why I decided to go solo after this long, I just hope that our fans will still listen to my solo music.

R: Why is now the right time to leave the band, in your opinion?

A: We’re all in it for different reasons and I didn’t feel like the rest of Endless Innocence had the same ideas and visions as I do. I’m in it completely for the music and didn’t feel like they all felt the same way.

R: Were there any fights or arguments that stemmed the split?

A: Not really, it was just the right time for me to leave, I feel.

R: Are you still friends with the rest of the band or are you out of each other’s lives completely?

A: We still speak but I think the boys are still a bit annoyed with me leaving the band if I’m honest. I don’t have a problem and I still want to stay in touch with them but we will have to see how things go.

R: What are your plans for the future? Do you have an album planned?

A: I’ve been writing a lot for the past three years and the sound wasn’t right for the band, but I feel like the sound is right for my solo career and so I have a lot of music to go through to decide what to use. I desperately want to get in the studio as soon as possible as I feel like the faster my album is out, the better.

R: Will there be a tour?

A: Of Course! What’s an album without a tour to come after it? I want people to be able to hear my music live as well as on an album. I don’t feel my voice was projected well in the band, and I want people to hear what I am capable of.

R: Do you think you’ll be nervous when it comes to doing a tour?

A: I’ve always had the comfort of sharing the stage with my closest friends, so when it comes to touring alone, I think I might find it hard. I’ve heard it’s a bit lonely but I’ll have all the crew so hopefully it’ll be fine. I’m worried that I won’t be able to use the stage as well because I was so restricted to one part of the stage in the past with a band surrounding me but now I’ll have a massive stage and that scares me a little bit.

R: You don’t seem like the nervous type. Is that a front you put on?

A: I sometimes put a front on depending on the size of the venue I’m playing. Sometimes I feel completely fine though and I’m in my element. It really does depend, but I’m quite confident most of the time.

R: Do you regret the band or is there anything you would change?

A: There’s definitely things I’d probably change but I don’t regret anything and I certainly don’t regret being in the band. I’m proud of the band because we went with our gut and we did what we thought the world needed at the time. They don’t need us anymore and we’ve done all we could do. I’m leaving the rest of the band to do what they think is right but I don’t feel like I can do anything at all to make a change in that band and I want to change the way people see me now. But being in the band has given me a platform as we were so successful and I am so grateful for what the band has done for me.

R: You recently did a solo gig at a festival, how did it go?

A: I had the best time. I was completely unprepared for the amount of people that were there though. The amount of love and people just interested in what I was doing and excited about it and happy to see me onstage again was amazing! I was not prepared for that. I was prepared for going on stage in mid-day and having there be maybe a couple hundred people. I didn’t know it was going to be thousands.

R: What are you most looking forward to in your future career?

A: So many things! I’m so excited for more people to hear my songs and let me know how they feel about it and how it makes them feel. I’m really looking forward to just getting my own stuff out there and touring and sharing my music with the world and I really hope I can inspire people with my new music and new sound.

Photo plans

As I am ready to start taking photographs of my model for my front cover and possibly my main article, I now need to plan out details for this.

What would I like my model to wear?

My model will be wearing black ripped jeans with either a blue or red checked shirt and some scuffed boots, either black or purple.

What would I like my models hair to look like?

The model I have chosen has big curly ginger hair. I have decided I would like to leave it down parted either at the middle or the side as it draws a lot of attention towards her face, and because this is the look that my model suits.

How would I like my model to have her makeup?

I would like my model to have a dark lip and either smokey eyes or winged liner. I have not yet decided whether I would like her to have a purple or red lip therefore I will try both to see what suits the look best at the time of shooting. Her face makeup will be pale looking as it suits her hair colour and is what my model looks best like.

Where will the photographs be taken?

As it is the winter months, it gets too dark, too early outside to be able to take photographs of my model outside. Therefore I have decided to take photographs in a studio. This way I can change outifts around and play around with makeup to get the right look as it would be harder to do outside.It is also more suitable to access my model in a studio.

I have created a flat plan as a guide to how I want my front cover to look. The drawing that represents the photograph that will be on the cover is not an accurate representation as I have not yet decided how I want my model to pose or what shot type to use.

I have created a mind map using gliffy.com with a few ideas that I wanted for my article.

 I firstly decided I wanted to do an article on an artist who was a sweet and innocent actress and turned out to be the front woman of a band and surprised the media world. I decided this was not the best option as it would be more suited to a Rock magazine rather than Indie/Alternative as a rock band would be more surprising for this story. Therefore I have decided to go with a female lead singer of an alternaive band, leaving the band and going solo. I thought that out of the three ideas that I had this would be best suited to my magazine.

My Reader Profile

I have created a reader profile to suit the target audience of my magazine. It represents things that they may like and enjoy. For example, chocolate, soft and alcoholic drinks, food, shops and shoes/brands etc. I have also added onto the reader profile, some magazines which this magazine is aiming to be similar to as they concentrate on the same genres and a guitar to represent the genre of music.

What Is a Reader Profile?

 

A reader profile is often used in magazines which portray what the readers of that magazine are like and what they are interested in. They often show things such as food, drink, electronics and clothing in image form along with a few statistics of additional information about the audience of the magazine. It allows readers to connect to each other and gives the magazine a group to aim for as a target for the magazine by using what their target audience are interested in.

Conclusion on Questionnaire findings.

I recorded a short podcast on soundcloud of my conclusion of my questionnaire findings and have explained what it is now allowing me to do.

I used an online pie chart creater to produce the pie charts of my results from the questionnaire I sent out. I then used www.slid.es to create a slideshow with my results in it.

I created a questionnaire to confirm exactly who my target audience will be and what they would definitely want to see in my magazine. I had the choice to use a qualitative or a quantitative questionnaire. I want my results in statistics in order to create my pie charts easier, I used closed questions as opposed to open questions so that it was quantitative. The advantage of using closed questions meant that I could easily quantify my results, to put them into either a graph or pie chart. There are disadvantages of using closed questions rather than open questions means that I can't get very detailed opinions from my audience.

School Magazine Cover & Contents

School Magazine Front Cover

In order to create my magazine cover I took photographs of people around the school in different locations and also a Medium long shot of a Sixth form student in the correct dress code to use as the main cover photo. I also took a picture of the Heworth Grange Logo from the Heworth Website.

I used Photoshop to create my magazine cover. To add text I used the text tool and chose the font "Perpetua" for both the Masthead and the main cover lines. I have used the most basic of the key features that magazines use, a masthead, straplines and main cover lines and also a main image with a few small images at the side. I didn't do any editing to the main image other than crop it to size and I only cropped and resized the smaller images. I took a photo of a "Pintrest" pin and deleted the background to use as a fun way of making the cover look like it is a notice board. With the Heworth logo I just used the magic eraser to remove the background.

To create my contents page I colour-picked the pink colour from the right hand side of the main cover background. I added a rectangle box to put the title of the page, "contents" in. I wrote a quick summary of the magazine adressed to the readers. I then put the stories alongside their page numbers and used different colours to differentiate the main story from the description of it. I carried the theme of the cover onto the contents and used pins to make it look noticeboard-like. To add the "HG MONTHLY" to the background of the page I used the text tool and double clicked the layer to edit it. I changed the opacity to make it blend to the background and unclicked the red colour of RGB and left the green and blue to create the colours that show now.
